WORDS BY INDIA WARD
Oh no, it’s that time of year again! Your winter blues are well and truly starting to kick in as you sit on your couch shivering, scrolling through your Instagram feed which is overflowing with sunny travel photos. Beautiful tanned girls in bikinis are living their best lives in Europe (#fromwhereyou’dratherbe), while you’re sitting in your trackies huddled under a blanket.
There is only one thing you can do to lift your spirits. Quick, call the girls around and watch some trashy chick flicks! Dream of falling in love and travelling, whilst laughing and most importantly releasing some of those built-up winter tears. Obviously, you can’t forget to have a few wines, chocolate and chips. One of the only perks of being stuck at home in winter and not on the beaches of Europe is that your summer body is a long way off!
From one girl to another, here are some of the all-time best chick flicks on Netflix which are bound to cure your S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder). As a fellow sufferer of this winter depression, I can confirm these movies will help you.
Bridget Jones’s Diary
Renée Zellweger as Bridget Jones may be one of the most relatable and hilarious leads of a Rom-Com ever. You also can’t help falling in love with the British superstars Colin Firth and Hugh Grant. The sequel, Bridget Jones – The Edge Of Reason, is also available on Netflix if you feel like bingeing Bridget.
The Notebook
This Nicholas Spark’s adaption is sure to make you cry, which might be just what you need to let out all those winter emotions. It’s not all sad though, Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling’s intense love will make you smile and laugh too.
Clueless
This movie has produced some of the best quotes of all time. Lose yourself in the crazy lives of super-rich Beverly Hills teens and reminisce on the 90s. To anyone who doesn’t love this Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy and Paul Rudd classic, I say, “Ugh as if!”.
Mamma Mia
You won’t be able to control yourself, it’s inevitable that you will sing along to every single word of this ABBA masterpiece. The Greek island FOMO is real and Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried are amazing. Of course, you also need to witness Pierce Brosnan’s iconic performance.
The Twilight Saga
All five of these movies are essential viewing and lucky for you the full 10 hours and 11 minutes are all on Netflix. Once you’ve seen them all multiple times, it is ok to start skipping New Moon and Eclipse because Twilight and Breaking Dawn (Part 1 and 2) is where the money is. Name a better duo than vampires and werewolves. I’ll wait…#teamedward.
If after watching all of these movies and your still down, you’ve got no choice but to book yourself onto the next flight to Europe. Alternatively a few more of my favourites are:
- Love actually
- PS I Love You
- Sex and the City
- Forgetting Sarah Marshall
- My Big Fat Greek Wedding
- The Sweetest Thing
